A man has pleaded guilty in a $1 million charity fraud case involving the sale of donated mattresses, officials said Friday.
Adam Shyrock, 36, and Genevieve Cruz were charged in April 2015 on multiple counts of theft in the scheme, according to a 17th Judicial District Attorney news release.
Shyrock pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of charitable fraud-scheme to defraud and one count of theft, the release said.
Charges alleged that Shyrock and Cruz acquired Serta mattresses under false pretenses, claiming they were being donated to the Ecumenical Refugee and Immigration Services Inc. in Denver and given to refugees, the release said. Cruz was the donation coordinator for the charity.
The two then allegedly sold the mattresses at lowered prices out of Adams County storage units.
Shyrock’s sentencing is scheduled for May 16 in Adams County District Court.
