ROCKIES 7, REDS 6
At Goodyear Ballpark
Goodyear, Ariz. — Jorge De La Rosa pitched the Rockies longest outing so far this spring and Cristhian Adames blasted a home run onto the roof in right field as Colorado outlasted the Reds on Friday.
De La Rosa got through six innings while working on his curveball. He also singled in his first game hitting this spring, then scored on Adames’ long home run.
Adames, who started at shortstop and led-off, went 2-for-4.
De La Rosa will cut back his pitch output in a final spring start next week. “This is as far as we’ll push him,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.
Weiss on Friday for April 4.
HITS
** Minor-league second baseman Pat Valaika, hitting eighth, hammered a three-run homer in the second inning to left field.
** Minor-league catcher Tony Wolters went 2-for-3 with a double. And he blocked a De La Rosa curveball in the dirt, then tagged out Billy Hamilton trying to sneak home from third base.
MISSES
Miguel Castro, who s pitched so well for the Rockies in spring, allowed two home runs in the ninth inning, but held on for a save.
“They got the barrel to a couple balls. But that can happen,” Weiss said. “I like the way he came back and put the inning down, put the game away.”
