Fort Collins police say was armed with a large sword.

Mark Bade, 35, is accused of felony menacing in the case. He wasn’t injured in the encounter in which the officer’s shot missed.

Authorities identified the officer involved as 46-year-old Thomas Colvin,an eight-year veteran of the department. He is on paid administrative leave per police policy.

The shooting happened about 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday at an apartment on the 1000 block of Oxford Lane.

Authorities say officers were initially called to the scene about 5 a.m. on reports of a loud disturbance. Upon arrival, Bade was armed with the sword when he greeted officers at the door and the officer fired, police say.

Details on the sword were not released.

The Larimer County Critical Incident Response Team has been activated to investigate the case.
