A suspect has been arrested in a Denver apartment fire that injured 11 people — two of them in critical condition.
The arrest was made as part of an arson investigation, said Luis Cedillo, a Denver Fire Department spokesman.
The fire broke out Sunday night in northwest Denver, at the Federal View Apartments, near the intersection of Federal Boulevard and West 26th Avenue.
Cedillo did not identify the suspect. However, Kenneth L. Shepard, 57, is scheduled to appear in Denver Court Friday morning on suspicion of multiple counts of arson in connection with a fire that occurred Sunday at 2625 Federal Blvd.
Shepard, who has a lengthy arrest record in Colorado, remains in custody at the Denver jail.
During the fire on Sunday, people jumped from the third floor of the apartment building to escape the flames and smoke. Children were dropped from the upper floors into the arms of people below.
Most of the injuries were caused by smoke inhalation, officials said. The Red Cross assisted 11 people who were displaced from six units in the building, which houses low-income residents.
