The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office reported late Monday a series of disturbances at its jail that involved at least eight inmates whose actions were described as “inciting a riot.”
The disturbances began Thursday when an inmate became belligerent and uncooperative after he was told he could not participate in a program, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. He was taken to the booking area.
The next incident took place when jail staff received a tip that a female inmate had threatened to harm herself. Deputies were escorting the woman, who was described as uncooperative, to the booking area when a disturbance began in the intake pod, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
Deputies ordered all inmates to return to their bunks. One inmate refused to follow orders and walked to another area in the pod. When deputies confronted him, the inmate became belligerent, and he was removed from the intake pod.
After that inmate was taken away, other inmates told deputies they did not have to follow directions. The Larimer sheriff’s news release described their behavior as “consistent with inciting a riot.”
More deputies arrived to remove inmates from the intake unit and to escort them to booking.
At least one inmate who physically resisted was taken to the ground and was strapped into a restraint chair, the news release said.
Three other inmates were removed from the intake pod for refusing to follow orders. Another inmate was moved to a different cell after he flooded his original cell and then threw feces and urine, the news release said.
Larimer sheriff’s deputies are working with the Eighth Judicial District Attorney’s Office to consider potential charges against the inmates involved in the disturbances.
A Sheriff’s Office spokesman could not be reached for comment.
