The transformation of the former Barnes & Noble store on the 16th Street Mall has begun.

erected a two-story barricade around its future downtown Denver storefront on Tuesday, shielding the old bookstore space at 16th and Tremont from view during the upcoming construction.

The men and women’s clothing retailer expects to open the 22,000-square-foot store — its first location in Colorado and just its second U.S. store not on the East or West coasts — this fall, according to the barricade’s text.

More specifically, Denver Pavilions officials said Tuesday they’re hoping for sometime in October — in time for Uniqlo to showcase its popular winter line of lightweight down jackets and affordable cashmere sweaters.

Uniqlo announced its plans last April to open a store at the Pavilions, part of a wave of change at the downtown shopping center that has also included a and .
