Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign event April 17, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (Frank Franklin II, The Associated Press)
Donald Trump s poll numbers had been sagging lately, and it looked like we were headed for a contested convention. Ted Cruz had won 10 races and was on the move. The leaders of the Colorado Republican Party did their part by making sure Trump did not receive a delegate from our state. Surprisingly, however, Trump used the Colorado GOP shenanigans to demonstrate how corrupt our leaders are, and his poll numbers are on the rise again. It looks like Trump might win the nomination on the first vote — all with the help of our brilliant state party leaders.
Thank you, Colorado GOP, for not letting us vote on a candidate. And all this time, we thought you were doing this for Cruz.

This letter was published in the April 19 edition. As much as I dislike Donald Trump, I have to agree with him and his supporters on one thing: if he gets the most delegates, he should win the Republican Party s nomination. The party s attempt to prevent him from getting the nomination by creating arbitrary delegate thresholds and convoluted rules is undemocratic. I feel the same way about the Democratic Party s superdelegates. They are both blatant attempts by the political establishment to protect itself from the will of the people.
