A suspect wanted in a drive-by shooting at a Pueblo high school apparently took his own life a short-time later with a gunshot.
The drive-by shooting happened behind East High School at about 3 p.m., just after classes were dismissed.
No students were injured and the victim of the drive-by shooting is a school staff member, Pueblo police said.
“A staff member reported driving away (from the school) when a male called their name and began firing,” police said in a news release. “The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”
Police were looking for a dark-colored van with faded paint on top and a luggage rack in connection with the shooting.
The Colorado State Patrol came across a van matching the description heading north on I-25 in El Paso County.
The van was pulled over and troopers then found the driver of the van deceased with “what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to a Pueblo police media release.
Dalton Sprouse, a spokesman for Pueblo City Schools, said the district is working closely with police and that an investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to submit an online tip at or call Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 719-542-7867.
