A woman was killed and two men seriously injured in a two-vehicle, head-on crash Tuesday afternoon in southern Colorado’s San Luis Valley.
The wreck happened about 12:30 p.m. on Colorado 159 in Costilla County when authorities say the driver of a 1999 Toyota Corolla crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 2004 Dodge Durango.
A passenger in the Toyota, 36-year-old Maria Villareal, of Espanola, N.M., was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The Toyota’s driver, 24-year-old David Garcia, of Alcalde N.M., had serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital. He has been charged with careless driving causing death and driving under suspension.
The Durango’s driver, an Alamosa man, was treated at a hospital for serious injuries but later released.
The State Patrol says drugs, alcohol and speed are not being considered factors in the wreck.
“The crash remains under investigation,” the State Patrol said in a news release.
