Authorities in western Colorado are investigating after two men allegedly broke into a home to steal a mountain bike, skis and a small amount of marijuana shortly after the owner committed suicide.

“How people could be so disrespectful to the deceased and his property is beyond me,” San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters said in a statement.

The Sunday burglary in the small town of Ophir (population 150) happened just after sheriff’s deputies left the home of 47-year-old Steven Root as part of an investigation into his death.

Investigators believe the two men, also from Ophir, then broke in and stole a number of items.

Deputies have recovered the bike and skis taken during the alleged burglary.

Authorities say they are continuing to investigate the case, which has been turned over to prosecutors. The sheriff’s office did not release the suspects’ names.

Ophir is south of Telluride and about 135 miles south of Grand Junction.
