The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed pitcher Ryan Vogelsong on the 15-day disabled list because of facial fractures, the team announced Tuesday.

Vogelsong was hit in the head by a 91 mph fastball from Rockies right-handed pitcher Jordan Lyles in the second inning of Monday’s game in Pittsburgh.

After Pittsburgh’s 6-3 victory, Pirates officials said Vogelsong, 38, has a left eye injury, including the orbital bone around it. He was admitted to Allegheny General Hospital.

His wife, Nicole, tweeted Tuesday morning that “he is stable” and “will be OK.”

Right-handed pitcher A.J. Schugel was recalled from Triple-A to take Vogelsong’s spot on the Pirates’ roster. Vogelsong is 1-1 with a 3.74 ERA in 21 2/3 innings pitched.
