Interview with Namiko Eshima, general manager
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I grew up in this business; we opened when I was just 13. My mother, Toshimi Chandonnet, started the restaurant and has taught me everything I know. My mother was also raised in a restaurant in Sapporo, Japan. She started at the tender age of 9.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: When you walk in to Namiko’s, you get the feeling of being appreciated. The staff remembers names and faces and what you like to order. These things make you feel like a part of our family. We have been blessed with being able to watch two and three generations grow and enjoy dining at Namiko’s over the years.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: My customers. Namiko’s has some of the best customers around. Lots of fantastic people who we generally see at least once a week, if not more, on an extremely regular basis. All of our regulars have come to expect a hug when they walk in the door and a friendly smile to greet them. There are days when I know I will be laughing and there are days that warm my heart. My customers are what make my line of work amazing every day.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: The biggest challenge for Namiko’s is getting new customers to understand you don’t need to be in pricey Cherry Creek or downtown Denver to get some of the best sushi and traditional Japanese food in Colorado. Customers are not coming to Namiko’s to be seen — they are coming for the outstanding service and amazing food we provide.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business?
A: Namiko’s has been in the same exact location since December 1988. We have expanded twice during our 28 years of business. We really are Japanese family owned and operated from day one. I grew up in Arvada, I love the city and I am lucky enough to go to work every day and see familiar faces. You will run into your friends and neighbors here at Namiko’s because we are a hidden treasure in Arvada.
