Aurora police are investigating a carjacking and subsequent deputy-involved shooting that happened Thursday east of the Cherry Creek Reservoir.

Police said the incident began when a vehicle was stolen in a carjacking on the 13700 block of East Rice Place about 11:30 a.m.

An Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputy in the area spotted the vehicle and was authorized to pursue it, said Officer Diana Cooley, a police spokeswoman.

“During the pursuit, the deputy made contact with the vehicle in attempt to disable (it),” Cooley said.

The driver of the carjacked vehicle then struck the sheriff’s office patrol car head-on, she said, at which point a deputy opened fire near the intersection of Winston Street and El Dorado Place, about three miles away from where the incident began.

“It’s still under investigation as to what led to the shots (being) fired,” Cooley said.

No one was wounded by the gunfire, authorities said.

Two suspects were arrested, one of whom had minor injuries from crashing into the sheriff’s office vehicle, police said. A deputy also had minor injuries because of the wreck.

Investigators did not immediately release further details on the case, including the suspects’ identities or how exactly the vehicle was carjacked. Cooley said she didn’t know if the suspects were armed.
