Denver police are investigating a 2-year-old’s death Thursday afternoon after responding to reports that a child fell from an upper-floor window of an apartment building.

Officers were called to the scene on the 1200 block of South Bellaire Street in the Virginia Village neighborhood about 2:45 p.m., where the child was pronounced dead.

Cmdr. Ron Saunier said one of the child’s parents, a roommate and several other children were in the apartment at the time of the incident. He said preliminary indications are that the fatal fall is an accident, but authorities will also consider negligence as part of the ongoing investigation.

Saunier cautioned that the police investigation is still in its very preliminary stages.

The child’s name and gender have not been released.

Several people gathered outside the Mint Urban Apartments on Thursday afternoon where the fall occurred. Some wept as they hugged one other.

Melissa Taylor, spokeswoman for the Denver Fire Department, said emergency crews were initially dispatched to the area on reports that a child had fallen out of a window.

Technician Raquel Lopez, a police spokeswoman, said she could not release further details on the case.

“It’s too early into the investigation,” she said.

Lopez said homicide detectives have been called to the scene in the southeast part of the city, which is typical for a death investigation.
