June is always a big month for marriage, but this year Denver recorded 17 more licenses than even last year’s record, when saw a sudden spike immediately after the U.S. Supreme Court decision clearing the way for same-sex marriage.

This June, clerk and recorder Debra Johnson issued 865 licenses.

“We were interested to see if we’d set a new record this June,” Johnson said. “June 26, 2015, was the historical day the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land. We know we had an uptick last June because of that decision.”

The office does not statistically track licenses by the gender of the applicants.

“Love is love,” said office spokeswoman Mica Ward.

The June uptick is expected to push Denver to an annual record as well. So far this year, the office is 2.8 percent ahead of last year’s pace, when it issued a record 7,339 marriage licenses for all of 2015. Although the number stands at 3,391 halfway through this year, August tends to be the biggest month for marriage.

Nearly 900 licenses were issued last August, and that month has been the leader in eight of the last 12 years.
