The state has found five possible routes through meadows, timber stands and rock outcroppings that could someday funnel hikers and bikers between a 110-mile trail through South Dakota’s Black Hills and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Much remains to be done before the recreational trail connecting Mount Rushmore and the George S. Mickelson Trail could see its first set of footprints or tire tracks. (AP Photo/Mike Stewart, File)

KEYSTONE, S.D. — A group that has raised millions of dollars for Mount Rushmore National Memorial has lost its contract to manage the park’s parking operations.

The National Park Service says itap awarded a 10-year contract to Colorado-based Xanterra Parks and Resorts Inc. to operate the parking garage, as well as food, beverage, merchandise and souvenir sales. The contract goes into effect in October.

The Mount Rushmore Society had managed the park’s parking garage for at least 20 years.

Xanterra is the park’s current concessioner for food, beverage and retail operations. The contract announced Wednesday merges those operations and the management of the parking garage.

Under the new contract, the standard parking rate will be reduced from $11 to $10. The parking pass will be valid for one year.
