The swim beach at Crawford State Park in western Colorado has been temporarily closed because E. coli bacteria was detected there.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife says itap likely the beach in Delta County will be closed through at least Friday.

Officials say the park tests the Crawford Reservoir’s waters at the swim beach each week, and elevated levels of E. coli were found during a recent test.

Results of another water sample, tested Thursday, were expected Friday.

“This is the first time in recent memory that the beach had to be closed,” Colorado Parks and Wildlife said in a statement. “Park officials said that a large number of geese have been concentrated in the beach area for the last week. Animal feces can cause surges of E. coli levels.”

While the beach is closed, park officials say water skiing is permitted.

Chatfield State Park’s swim beach after routine water testing found higher-than-allowable amounts of E. coli.
