Local Athletes to Watch
Former East High School star David Oliver, 34, will begin qualifying in the 110 meter hurdles in what is likely his final chance at making an Olympic team. He was the bronze medalist in Beijing in 2008 and is the four-time U.S. champion outdoors in the hurdles. He and missed going to London. Last year, he was seventh at worlds. … Former Buena Vista thrower Mason Finley snagged the top qualifying time in the discus with a throw of 218 feet, 11 inches. He’ll be joined by Colorado Springs resident Russ Winger, the husband of javelin thrower Kara Winger, ԻDenver’s Lance Brooks, who also advanced with the 10th qualifying spot. … Former Adams State standout Tabor Stevens qualified for the men’s steeplechase final. He is running his first year as a professional for Asics and is still training Alamosa. … Former CU Buffs Jenny Simpson, Sara Vaughn ԻSara Sutherland all advanced to the 1,500 meter women’s semifinals, as did current Stanford runner and former Niwot distance standout Elise Cranny.
