Re: July 9 news story.
I read with dismay your article regarding the city of Denver’s funding cut for the Denver Urban Gardens free seed program.
In stark contrast to food stamps, this program is not a handout, but one that requires recipients to do all of the work to reap the benefits. They have to apply for the free seeds, find the place to plant, tend to them daily and then after many months of care, they can eat the food they grew.
It teaches them to plant, care for and even cook what they grow. For the family that has the desire and fortitude to apply and then plant, I applaud them.
Denver should be increasing this funding, not cutting it. Helping people to help themselves should be the goal of our government. This program does just that.
