Re: July 28 news story.
Denver’s plan to open a protected bikeway on South Broadway will have multiple positive benefits for the citizens of Denver. The launch of the pilot program provides excellent opportunities to evaluate bicycle safety. As pediatricians, we see the detrimental effects of bicycle collisions and the lethal results of collisions without helmets. Denver has no helmet laws, and research shows that most bicycle collisions occur at intersections. We propose that the city take this unique opportunity to evaluate other aspects of bicycle safety, particularly helmet use. We believe that helmet laws will improve the safety of Denver’s citizens. Adding specific observation of helmet use to this pilot could provide evidence to promote the importance of helmet laws in Colorado.
