Re: Aug. 27 news story.

The Denver Post¶¶Òõap article about Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) finances makes it clear that the agency faces substantial challenges.  One problem is that the percentage of hunters in the population, and money from license fees, continues to decrease.   However, a much larger pool of wildlife users exists — birdwatchers, wildlife photographers, hikers — who don’t hunt but could help fund CPW.

Right now the general public can purchase a Habitat Stamp and/or contribute via the Nongame Checkoff on their income tax form, to raise money for wildlife conservation.   But both of these need a massive publicity push.  How many people know about the Habitat Stamp or where to buy it?

More and more wildlife agencies are reaching out to non-traditional wildlife users and broadening their base of support.  The Post can aid this process by fostering discussion between CPW and the non-hunting public.  Let’s get started!
