Suspect arrested in Fort Collins child abuse case; infant dies at Children’s Hospital

A 24-year-old man has been arrested as a suspect in a Fort Collins child abuse case.

An infant, an 11-month-old girl, was brought to Poudre Valley Hospital by her mother to be treated for injuries and police began an investigation in the case on Wednesday, according to a Fort Collins Police Department media release.

On Thursday, police arrested Juan Francisco Canales Hernandez as a suspect in a child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury case.

The child, who was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, died and investigators learned of her death on Friday, police said.

The infant suffered injuries inside an apartment on Blue Spruce Drive, the release said. An investigation is ongoing.
