
Out-of-state football games are not unusual for Colorado high schools.
The Legacy Lightning’s trip to Chino Hills, Calif., last weekend was one of 38 out-of-state games scheduled for the 2016 season, according to the Colorado High School Activities Association.
Colorado high school football teams travel out of state for a number of reasons, whether it’s to compete against stronger programs, participate in a national showcase or cut travel distance.
“Schools are generally responsible for their regular season (schedule),” CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann said.
Bayfield, Durango and Montezuma-Cortez — all located near the New Mexico border — lead the way in 2016 with three out-of-state games apiece on their schedules.
For the Lightning’s trip to California, Legacy players paid either $1,213 or $1,394 to cover costs, according to the . The students were responsible for raising the money and held several fundraisers throughout the year to help cover costs.
Out-of-state games
Twenty-seven Colorado high schools have a total of 38 games scheduled out-of-state for the 2016 prep football season. Here is the breakdown:
Class 5A (11): Bear Creek, Castle View, Columbine, Grandview, Highlands Ranch, Legacy, Mullen, Pomona, Ralston Valley (2) and ThunderRidge.
Class 4A (1): Monarch.
Class 3A (4): Durango (3) and Silver Creek.
Class 2A (7): Bayfield (3), Moffat County and Montezuma-Cortez (3).
Class 1A (6): Dolores (2), Holyoke, Ignacio, Trinidad and Wray.
Class 8-man (9): Holly, Mancos, Norwood, Plateau Valley, Sedgwick County (2) and Springfield.
Class 6-man (0): None.
