On Monday, the first presidential debate will be held. You are going to see two desperate candidates argue and insult each other for 90 minutes while Lester Holt tries to play moderator. You are not going to learn anything new about either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, and in the end, you are going to be just as disappointed as ever. Why? The system has failed you.

The two-party system is designed to self-perpetuate and exclude outside competition. Never in our time have there been two candidates so poorly representing our country. You deserve better — we all deserve better. However, unless you do something about it, you will only get more of the same. After you watch the juvenile, useless debate, do your part to make a change. Answer the pollster calls to support Gary Johnson’s inclusion in the second debate. Don’t encourage the system that failed you — it will only change by your actions.

Re: Sept. 15 Patty Limerick column.

I agree with Patty Limerick’s plea for presidential debate moderators to “declare you will serve as moderators only if you are given the authority you need … to stand on behalf of your increasingly desperate fellow citizens.”

Kumbaya.
