A man who pulled a gun on a victim — and was shot himself as the victim attempted to wrestle the gun away — has been arrested, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspected assailant was identified Monday as 30-year-old Ulysses Maples, the sheriff’s office said.
The shooting happened at about 8:10 p.m. Thursday in the 1600 block of Hampton South, the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators say a man was drinking in a gazebo on the north side of the street when three other men approached. One of the three pulled a gun and threatened to shoot the man who had been drinking. A struggle ensued, and the gun fired.
Deputies found blood splattered in the gazebo and spent shell casings.
After the incident the sheriff’s office received a call from personnel at a Fort Carson gate who said they had a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries that are not life- threatening.
The subsequent investigation identified the man shot as the suspect who had pulled the gun at the gazebo, the release said.
After being released from the hospital, Maples has been booked at the El Paso County jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, felony menacing and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.
