I am disappointed to see Daniel Cole’s attempt to normalize Steve Bannon’s actions. While I acknowledge that it is an opinion piece, it is poorly argued and falls prey to lazy research.
For example, Cole relies on circumstantial evidence to uphold Bannon’s character, claiming that association with white nationalists (including publishing their articles in his former news outlet, Breitbart News) does not indicate assent with their views. Yet, only a few paragraphs above, Cole criticizes left-leaning politicians who, through a series of mental gymnastics, he ties to Stalin and Anthony Weiner.
Furthermore, Cole ignores some of the deeply concerning aspects of Bannon’s past and published political views, as well as his website’s ties with white nationalist groups. These associations are certainly up for consideration, as Bannon is poised to become a top adviser to President-elect Donald Trump. It is inappropriate to claim that criticism of Bannon is only a “caricature” by sore losers.
We shouldn’t become apologists for those associated with racism, sexism and white nationalism. We also shouldn’t dismiss the very real fears of many Americans now facing a Trump presidency and Trump-selected cabinet. These are weighty issues that deserve reasoned and thoughtful responses from all media outlets.
