Warm weekend in Denver but bundle up if you’re going skiing in the mountains

Mountains expected to get 2-3 inches of snow an hour Saturday night

While those in the Denver area will likely be enjoying a warm Saturday, a storm is brewing in the mountains that is expected to drop up to 2-3 inches of snow an hour tonight.

A National Weather Services spokeswoman said the Denver area should have a high in the mid to upper 50s. Skies should be partly cloudy during the day and at night with a slight chance of rain and snow in the evening. Saturday night’s low should be between 24-30 degrees.

Sunday is expected to be mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of snow in the morning. Highs should be in the lower 40s and lows are expected to be between 19-23 degrees. NWS expects wind speeds between 10-15 mph.

But as those staying in the Denver area enjoy warmer weather, everyone going to the mountains should wear extra layers.

NWS issued a winter storm warning from 2 p.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday. A spokeswoman said between 1-4 inches of snow are expected to drop in the late afternoon, growing to 6-11 inches at night. Between 2-4 inches of snow are expected Sunday morning, with additional snow likely into the afternoon and night.

Winds during the day Saturday are expected to be between 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Above 11,000 ft, gusts are expected to reach 60 mph. NWS said driving could get very hazardous with the expected snowfall and wind gusts creating blowing snow. Winds Sunday should reach between 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

The mountain highs Saturday are expected to be between 28-36 degrees with lows between 15-23 degrees.Sunday temperatures are expected to reach 21-29 degrees and lows are expected to drop to 9-15 degrees.
