Girls swimming state championship: Fossil Ridge cements dynasty as array of individuals shine

The Sabercats won 9 of 11 swimming events to capture their third Class 5A title in seven seasons

cemented its status as a girls swimming dynasty Friday at Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center in Thornton, as the Sabercats’ score of 390 bested defending champion Fairview’s 344 points to give the school its third Class 5A championship in seven years.

Zoe Bartel headlined Fossil Ridge’s title effort, as the Sabercats junior won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, the latter in a state-record time of 1 minute, 0.22 seconds. She was also involved in two relay championships for the Sabercats — the 200 medley and 200 free — as Fossil Ridge won nine of the meetap 11 swimming events.

In Class 4A at Edora Pool Ice Center in , qualified 20 individuals for Saturday’s finals and finished with 408 points to top runner-up (276) and third-place finisher Evergreen (230). Individual highlights from the meet included Windsor’s Morgan Friesen, who completed a career sweep in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.72 to pace the Wizards to a sixth-place finish.

And in the first-ever Class 3A meet in Thornton, Kennidy Quist and Davy Brown paced Aspen (209) to the title  Saturday over St. Mary’s Academy (187) and (173). Alex Reddington starred for St. Mary’s, defending last season’s 4A titles in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
