Re: “” Feb. 21 news story.
There is massive angst about the current disarray over immigration. President Donald Trump has hit a nerve with his blanket policy, even the reformulated version. The operative emotion at work in both sides is fear: immigrants’ fear of being deported or refused entry; a nation’s fear that violent persons are getting in.
The Denver Post presents demonstrations of those we don’t fear; this exacerbates the lunacy of the administration’s position. But what does one say about the Somali young adults in the Twin Cities who, although born in the U.S.A., sought to join the Islamic State and their program of violence?
Hard to understand why, but the danger in the Twin Cities was real. In all fairness, legitimate fears on both sides are not properly acknowledged by the opponent. Is this the demise of civil debate? As a result, there is little common sense involved in a better approach to the issue … yet.

Get ready, Colorado! The immigration policies announced by the Trump administration this week will severely damage Colorado’s economy, particularly agriculture, hospitality, health care and construction, which all depend on immigrant workers. Despite the tone of the administration’s rhetoric, very few undocumented immigrants commit crimes that harm other persons.
This move will undermine Colorado law enforcement by pressuring local jurisdictions to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. The memos announcing the new policies speak of “deputizing” local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws, incurring costs and liability for them. I support Denver’s determination to be a “sanctuary city” and to protect all of its residents.
There’s no doubt the U.S. immigration system is broken. These enforcement initiatives make it worse, not better.

Re: Feb. 22 editorial.
I strongly disagree with your editorial, especially the headline. The order is not beneath me. I strongly support it. You should not encourage ignoring the laws that are on the books. Change the laws if you can, but illegal aliens are illegal, despite all of the politically correct euphemisms that liberals prefer to use.
