Re: March 10 guest commentary by Sen. Michael Bennet.

I have heard criticisms of both U.S. senators from Colorado for not taking positions on important issues in open town hall meetings. It is not clear to me whether Sen. Cory Gardner will vote for or against the Republican plan to replace the Affordable Care Act.

We are fortunate, however, that The Denver Post allowed Sen. Michael Bennet to make his position on Trumpcare perfectly clear in his guest commentary.  It is to be opposed for several cogent and convincing reasons, among them being: cutting taxes on the rich to cut support for poor kids and seniors; that Trumpcare would “devastate Medicare”; and shifting costs from the federal to the state governments.

Bennet is also clear and correct in his conclusion: We need  “bipartisan consensus to fix the current law, so we can expand coverage and reduce health costs for millions of Americans.”

The U.S. needs to stop having this decades-long health care debate.  It is time to recognize that a private insurance-dominated program is too costly — and no, we do not have the best system in the world.  The lowest-cost health care delivery system is Medicare.

Congress should focus on: 1) fixing the funding and reimbursement issues associated with Medicare; 2) eliminating the multitude of government health care programs; 3) allowing pre-65-year-olds to buy into Medicare; and 4) providing for a higher level of private insurance for those desiring it. This would greatly simplify the system for all providers and the insured while lowering the overall costs.
