That Donald Trump is a riot! In his carnival-barker campaign, he claimed he would build the “most beautiful wall” and make Mexico pay, while his “something terrific” health care plan would cover everyone cheaper than the Affordable Care Act. I know! It sounded unrealistic to me, too! Guess what? Mexico ain’t paying and 24 million people will lose health care coverage to what is essentially a tax cut for the rich disguised as health care reform.
So now Trumpwants to build a massive military and ridiculous wall at the expense of the environment, diplomacy, scientific research, agriculture, Big Bird and any other public good to society. Make no mistake, these are all public goods. The guy is a snake-oil salesman and a political funhouse mirror, distorting reality along the way.Budgets are moral documents and this is an immoral, heartless and soul-destroying budget. Unfortunately, the joke is on us.

As a medical social worker, I helped frail seniors access food through Meals on Wheels after they arrived home from the hospital. When people are physically unable to cook, drive to a grocery store, or afford a delivery fee, Meals on Wheels literally keeps them alive. This is a low-budget, volunteer-run program to meet people’s most basic need.
For many seniors, that meal is the only one they have each day, and delivery volunteers may provide their only social interaction. Federal budget cuts that would reduce funding for this program illustrate the callousness and cruelty permeating the GOP’s political ideology in the name of “saving money” while redistributing it to the wealthiest Americans. Promoting cuts to essential services as “compassionate” is ill-conceived irony. I believe most of us are willing to have our tax money allocated to keep seniors from starving. Some things are worth paying for.
