Re: March 25 news story.
The Denver Postap article on charter schools lays out a faulty “either-or” proposition: either extreme, Betsy DeVos-style “school choice” that pushes private school vouchers and unmitigated charter authorization, or the traditional, one-size-fits-all approach that has failed at-risk children for years.
Conspicuously absent from the article is the common-sense middle ground championed by mainstream progressives across the country, including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Sen. Michael Bennet and Congressman Jared Polis.
Traditional schools and public charters can have a complementary relationship. This is occurring in Denver, where innovative, progressive education reform includes high-quality charter schools that are successfully serving huge numbers of historically under-served families.
Equity in education is the civil rights battle of our time. Children should have access to a quality education, regardless of their socioeconomic status or physical location.
