AURORA — A police sergeant with 13 years of experience with the department has been placed on reassignment as investigators look into a weekend shooting.

Michael Adrian Torres, 24, was near the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Sable Boulevard, police said Monday. Torres remained in a hospital Monday, and details on his condition were not released.

A 17-year-old girl in the vehicle with Torres during the incident was not hurt. No officers were injured.

Torres was under police surveillance at the time of the shooting and was wanted in connection with aggravated motor vehicle theft out of Denver.

Police gave few details on the shooting, noting the on-going investigation, which centers on whether the sergeant complied with the department’s guidelines on “authorized firing of a weapon.”

About 3 p.m. Saturday, police tried to arrest Torres, who was in a vehicle parked in a lot at 1550 Sable Blvd. He fled in the vehicle, but it came to a stop in a nearby ditch.

Chief Nick Metz said the sergeant, who was not identified Monday, shot Torres with a rifle. At least five other officers were present, Metz said.

The sergeant has been interviewed by investigators and has been placed on routine, paid reassignment pending the outcome of the investigation. The incident is the first time the sergeant has been involved in a shooting, Metz said.

The incident is being investigated by Aurora police, Denver police and the Adams County district attorney’s office.
