Re: April 1 news story.

The Elk Meadows dog park is similar to other dog parks: they are simply dog toilets and pollute nearby ecosystems and are unsightly. It is not taxpayers’ responsibility to provide play areasfor those who irresponsibly get dogs and have no private yards. Dog-park closings are not uncommon, but the filth, smell and noise associated with them persist. Pleas by dog owners that volunteers will monitor the situation are empty: Where was their presence during the period that led up to disgusting conditions?

Yourarticle about keeping Elk Meadow dog park open hit a nerve. The dog owners who enjoy this great asset should get Jefferson County’scooperation in solving any problems theiruse might cause. To just ignore us, negotiate in bad faith and ignore the value of this park to thousands of taxpaying residents is unacceptable.

I hope they will rethink their position and work with the community on a mutually agreeable solution.
