Walnut Brewery, a longtime fixture in downtown Boulder, will be closing June 4, to be replaced by another staple of the city: Boulder Beer.
Tennessee-based CraftWorks Restaurants & Brewery Group, the current owners of Walnut Brewery, announced on Thursday a transfer of ownership to Boulder’s Frank Day, in Boulder and . According to the CraftWorks release, Day will partner with the local craft brewer to open Boulder Beer on Walnut in July.
“In an era where taking time to share a meal or raise a pint is endangered, reinvigorating this historic brewpub will only enrich Frank Day’s legacy as someone who continues to provide Boulder with restaurants that promote a feeling of community,” the statement read.
CraftWorks was formed in 2010 when — the Louisville-based group encompassing Walnut Brewery and Old Chicago, ChopHouse and Rock Bottom brands — to a private equity firm that at the same time purchased the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant Group.
Walnut Brewery has been in operation in downtown Boulder since 1990. The opening of the brewpub inspired Day to launch Rock Bottom, which was headquartered in Louisville until its sale to CraftWorks. CraftWorks maintains corporate offices in Broomfield and Chattanooga, Tenn.
