Former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation James Comey testifies in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee during an oversight hearing on the FBI on Capitol Hill May 3, 2017 in Washington, D.C.

Re: May 14 letters to the editor.

The predictable yet mindless cacophony of doomsday angst concerning the firing of James Comey reflects a shallow understanding of both the issues involved and the character of the FBI and its thousands of agents. Added to this lack of intelligent discourse is the hypocrisy displayed by those who, but a few months ago, were screaming for Comey’s dismissal.

As a former federal prosecutor, I assert without hesitation that the fastest way to ensure a thorough investigation by the FBI is to try to influence it or cover it up. Nothing inspires increased diligence from the FBI more than an attempt to muzzle it. Letter-writers who don’t think the president knows this have been blinded by prejudice and misinformation.

Further, I invite those who fear the demise of democracy to ask themselves whether they would allow themselves to be influenced to neuter an ongoing investigation. If their answer is no, I challenge them to ponder what makes them think they are so morally superior to the president or the Justice Department or the agents of the FBI?
