Re: “” June 26 Chris Collins column.
I support Rep. Chris Collins’ Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. I assume that he is an accomplished marksman at the firing range, hitting the paper silhouette dead center.
Let me ask Collins this: If you had your gun with you on the morning of the shooting of Rep. Steve Scalise, would you have been able to ignore your own panic to run to safety and calmly discern who the shooter was and where he was located? Would you have been able to, without hesitation, accurately fire at him without accidentally hitting your colleagues?
Because Collins is not a trained member of the U.S. Capitol Police, I don’t believe he could have.
Again, I support Collins’ right to carry a gun. But I do not support the illusion that he could have been effective in thwarting the sniper at the baseball field that day, and in my opinion that makes him as dangerous as the gunman.
