Is productive bipartisanship possible in this day and age? It turns out that it is, and in a surprising context. An Associated Press article published by The Denver Post reports that a defense bill that passed the House with strong support acknowledges that climate change is a threat to national security.
There is more to the story: Forty-six Republicans, including Colorado’s Mike Coffman, joined with Democrats to defeat an amendment that would have blocked further study of the impact of climate change on national security. Twenty-two of those Republicans are members of a growing bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus.
Readers who are interested in this development may also be interested in the carbon dividends proposal from the Climate Leadership Council and a similar proposal from the Citizens Climate Lobby. It is a confusing time in our national life, but there are reasons to be hopeful and engaged.
