Colorado’s population could increase to 8.5 million by 2050, according to forecast numbers from the . That would be an increase of more than 50 percent from 2015.

Other highlights:

  • Douglas County had the highest percentage change in population from 1970 to 2015 (3,647 percent), growing from 8,594 residents to 322,017
  • Elbert County will have the highest growth percentage from 2016 to 2050 (162 percent), growing from 26,069 residents to 68,375 by 2050
  • By 2050, three counties will have higher populations than Denver County (833,221): El Paso (1,077,643), Arapahoe (1,070,837) and Adams (885,859)
