Kevin Lundberg, a top GOP state lawmaker, joins crowded primary for Colorado treasurer

The Berthoud legislator joins Justin Everett, Polly Lawrence and Brita Horn in vying for the GOP nomination

State Sen. Kevin Lundberg, a top GOP lawmaker at the Colorado Capitol, is jumping into the now-crowded Republican primary for state treasurer.

“I’m running for treasurer to protect your wallet,” the Berthoud legislator said in announcing his run over the weekend.

Lundberg, who sits on the Colorado General Assembly’s powerful Joint Budget Committee, is the fourth Republican to enter the race, following fellow state lawmakers  and and Routt County Treasurer into the contest.

Lundberg is a strong supporter of the state’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights and limited government principles. He has spent 15 years in the Colorado legislature, where he chairs the Senate Appropriations and Legislative Health Exchange Oversight committees.

Other leadership roles he has held at the Capitol include Senate assistant majority leader.

“My experience has given me a broad understanding of Colorado state government with an extra emphasis on the budget and state finances,” Lundberg said in a news release announcing his campaign. “My goal is to maximize the office of State Treasurer by boldly speaking out on state policies that affect your family budget and the economic vitality of Colorado. I intend to protect your wallet through limited, conservative principles.”

On the Democratic side,  of Adams County is the only person to announce a run for the post.

Current , a Republican, is term-limited and is expected to jump into the Colorado governor’s race.

One of the main issues in the treasurer’s race promises to be the troubled Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association, is under scrutiny for its deteriorating financial position.
