There have been many issues raised about immigration and white supremacy in recent weeks. These events have created fear in many, especially children, and has consequently led to effects that alter not only one’s safety, but health and well-being.

As a pediatrician, I have seen firsthand how this fear affects the health of a child. Children will not be able to play outside and live without worrying about whether they will be harassed or injured. If families are too scared to leave their homes, they will not be able to make appointments or will not bring in their sick child until it is too late.

We as people and a society need to be more accepting of our differences. We need to raise our children in a welcoming world and lead by example. We need to ensure that everyone, especially our children are safe and not living in fear.
