Re: Aug. 25 news story.

The recent pardon of convicted former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio by President Donald Trump illustrates a continuing and dangerous pattern of this president to challenge the authority of the nation’s judicial branch of government. Trump has consistently attempted to circumvent judiciary decisions he does not agree with and has disparaged judges who have issued those decisions. This narcissistic and alarming behavior can also be seen in his contempt toward the legislative branch when he issues personal attacks against those congressional representatives who oppose his misguided policies. Furthermore, Trump persists in his attacks on the fourth estate, the free press of the country, discrediting its reporting when it doesn’t align with his distorted perceptions and beliefs. These deliberate efforts by the president to impugn the roles of the legislative and judicial branches of government, as well as the free press, constitute a direct threat to our democracy.

Having lived in Maricopa County, Arizona, for 15 years Iam familiar with Sheriff Joe Arpaio and, like most retirees in the Phoenix area, I gladly voted for him every election. He naturally invoked the wrath of the PC media because he did not coddle criminals — legal or illegal. This culminated in a leftist judge convicting him, after denying him a jury trial, for fulfilling his duty and inconveniencing some immigrants until he could determine their identity. He was a hero to countless people whose neighborhoods and retirement communities were subjected to a scourge of crime, home invasions and killings (including in our own “safe” retirement community).

It’s different sitting behind a high bench with bailiffs for security. Long live Sheriff Joe!

By pardoning Joe Arpaio, Donald Trump in his continuing quest to be dictator of the United States of America, has once again shown his contempt for democracy and the system of separation of powers. At the same time he has again given the presidential stamp of approval to racism.
