Some of the right-leaning news sources are praising Donald Trump for his handling of the flood in Houston. At the same time, some liberal news sources are bashing him for only using this occurrence as an opportunity to pat himself on the back for a perceived job well done. Both groups are missing the point.

The focus of this tragedy needs to be the people of Houston. We should judge Trump by what he does in the coming days and weeks. He called for a 9 percent reduction of funding to disaster-relief programs in his proposed budget. He must reverse this. He needs to sign off on a relief package to help the citizens of Houston. He must call for funding to pre-plan for disaster mitigation in the future. Finally, he must approve spending to fix our crumbling dams and levies. These are the actions of an effective president.

No one wishes Donald Trump out of the White House more than I, but my jaw dropped when national TV news featured a person complaining the presidentap trip to Texas was a political stunt. I am glad he went — Texas is in a world of hurt. I am dismayed we are so down in the dirt politically that someone would criticize a presidential visit to a disaster zone.

We did the whole “Obama is not my president” thing (due in part to Trump), but now itap flipped to “Trump is not my president.” Get a grip. He was, he is, and the rest of us have a duty to be responsible citizens not yelling at each other. Fight fair, and remember your junior high civics class.
