Recently a letter was published regarding a couple who ended up with a flat tire on their rental car and no spare tire and jack. The writer was urging renters to check their cars. Three years ago I had a flat tire on a rental car in Portland, Ore. A Portland police officer stopped to help me since my car was stuck in the middle of a busy street. He informed me that most rental car companies do not equip their cars with spare tires or jacks. We looked in mine and found that there was no tire, which confirmed the policeman’s statement. The issue, then, is for someone to pursue why rental car companies are purposely removing spare tires and jacks and push to have that policy changed.
