The declawing of cats is a barbaric and cruel practice that should be banned by law. It causes cats real suffering; you are essentially de-knuckling the cat and it leaves the animal disfigured to it own nature. It can’t quickly climb trees, defend itself, scratch to mark territory, or use a litter box comfortably. If you can’t handle the sharp claws, trim them. If you think declawing will save your furniture from ruin, you are wrong, as the book “I Can Pee On This” testifies. Declawing a cat is like cutting down all the trees in the forest so that the trees don’t burn.
Krista Kafer bemoans the fact that cats won’t be adopted from shelters because potential owners might want them declawed. These people don’t want a real troublesome, bothersome, sleeping-on-your-head-at-night, climbing-the-drapes-and-rolling-toilet-paper-across-the-living-room-floor kind of cat anyways. Most of us cat lovers wouldn’t have it any other way.
