
People who buy health insurance on their own in Colorado have until the end of the day Friday to buy a plan if they want coverage to kick in Jan. 1. But, unlike in states that use the federal health insurance exchange, Coloradans will have a little longer to buy coverage if they are OK with a plan that starts later in the new year.
In Colorado, people shopping for health insurance on the individual market use to pick a plan that comes with tax credits provided under the Affordable Care Act. While Friday is the deadline to buy a plan that starts Jan. 1, open enrollment in Colorado lasts until Jan. 12. That’s because Colorado gained greater autonomy when it chose to set up its own health insurance exchange, rather that going with the federal .
For the states that use Healthcare.gov, the government this year for buying a plan. Open enrollment on the federal exchange slams shut at the end of the day Friday.
