Three people died Monday night in a two-vehicle, Christmas Day crash on Interstate 70 east of Denver.

The crash, between a Dodge pickup truck and a Dodge Caravan minivan, happened in the interstate’s eastbound lanes near Tower Road.

Trooper Josh Lewis, of the Colorado State Patrol, said a fourth person was taken to University of Colorado Hospital with unknown injuries.

Investigators are still scouring the crash scene, but preliminary information was that the collision was head-on.

“That’s how it came in to us,” Lewis said.

The Colorado State Patrol says the three people killed in the crash were adults and that all died on scene.

The eastbound lanes of I-70 have been closed while state troopers investigate the wreck. Further information was not immediately released.

More than 600 people have died on Colorado’s roads this year, and the state is on pace to eclipse the that happened last year, the highest mark in more than a decade.

With Monday night’s triple-fatal crash, and the car-crash death last week of a 19-year-old Longmont woman in southwest Colorado, it appears the number of people who have died on the state’s roads this year has at least matched the tally from 2016.
