No matter where you chose to recreate, Sunday ought to provide some very nice January weather for doing it.
After some drizzle and light snow touched parts of metro Denver overnight Saturday, temperatures will climb to a high of 52 degrees, the National Weather Service predicts, comfortably above the average high temp for the month of 44.
Fortunately for downhill enthusiasts, the snow came down a bit harder in the Rocky Mountains, with ski resorts reporting fresh coats of powder to entice skiers and snowboarders. Breckenridge Ski Resort is reporting 5 inches of new snow over the past 24 hours, and Keystone Resort is reporting 4 inches.
With precipitation comes responsibility. Chain and traction laws are in effect on portions of Interstate 70 between Vail and Silverthorne, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. The traction law dictates that all passengers vehicles must have snow tires, tires with mud/snow designation or four-wheel or all-wheel drive capability to traverse . All tires must have a minimum of one-eighth of an inch of tread. Drivers that don’t adhere to the law risk a $130 fine.
Sunday is the beginning of a warming trend that could see spring-like conditions in Denver. The Weather Service is forecasting a high of 60 degrees Monday, followed by a high of 65 on Tuesday. The record high for Jan. 9 in Denver is 72 degrees.
Light snow showers in the mountains will gradually diminish this morning. Mountain travelers should take caution due to icy and snow packed roads. Conditions will improve later this morning.
