After being sentenced Thursday for committing acts of vandalism against the Fort Collins Islamic Center mosque in March, Joseph Giaquinto died by suicide Friday in a Fort Collins motel, states information released Monday by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy was conducted by Larimer County Coroner James Wilkerson. Cause of death was determined to be asphyxia by neck compression, a coroner’s office press release states.

Giaquinto’s body was found by hotel staff Saturday, said Larimer County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Moore.

Members of LCSO and Poudre Fire Authority responded to a call to the scene at 3:51 p.m. Saturday. Information on the incident was released publicly by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office Monday.

On Thursday, a judge sentenced Giaquinto to six months of incarceration on work-release and three years of reporting to the Larimer County Wellness Court. Giaquinto’s attorney, Heather Siegel with the Fort Collins Public Defender’s Office, read a letter to the court on her client’s behalf.
