
Re: “After the tax overhaul, America needs a balanced-budget amendment more than ever,” Jan. 5 George F. Will column.
Having taken issue with George F. Will’s past columns in these pages, itap fair to give him kudos for his position on balancing the budget and his ancillary support for term limits. I am a one-time Republican awakened by Ronald Reagan and subsequent administrations to the realization that if itap fair to call Democrats “tax-and-spend,” then itap fair to call Republicans “borrow-and-spend.” At the very least, the debate over a balanced budget would force us to grapple over what services we really want and how much in taxes we’re willing to pay for them. That alone would be worth the angst. The time has come to stop kicking this can of angst down to future generations and bear some of that burden ourselves.
